Seven off-grid bandas on a small island west of Unguja, inside a coral sanctuary privately managed since 1994 — fourteen guests at a time, and the reef is the entire point.

Chumbe is a conservation project that takes guests, rather than a resort that mentions conservation. The sanctuary around the island has been privately run since 1994 and is recognised internationally for the condition of its reef, with something like four hundred fish species recorded. Seven bandas work off the grid on rainwater and solar and take fourteen people in total; days go on the water or in the forest with a ranger, and what guests pay underwrites the marine protection and an education programme for Zanzibari schoolchildren.
