Where should I go on a Kenya safari?

The Maasai Mara is the heart of it — open plains thick with lion, cheetah and elephant, and the stage for the Great Migration's river crossings from roughly July to October. Most tailor-made Kenya safaris pair the Mara with one or two contrasting parks.

Amboseli puts great-tusker elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro; Samburu, on the northern frontier, holds species found nowhere else; Lake Nakuru brings flamingo and rhino; and the private conservancies bordering the Mara add night drives, walking and far fewer vehicles. How many days do I need, and when should I go?
