Mafia Island

Treehouses built around baobabs on tiny Chole Island, run without electricity and lit by lantern — a genuinely unusual stay whose income funds village education and conservation projects next door.

Chole Mjini stands on Chole Island, a short boat crossing from the Mafia shore, among the ruins and mangroves that give the island its character. Six treehouses are built high on platforms around baobab trunks, spaced well apart, with a seventh room at ground level; there is no electricity, so evenings are by lantern and there is no easy phone signal. The lodge was set up to work with the village, and it channels income into local employment, schooling on the mainland and heritage and conservation work — which for many guests is as much the reason to come as the setting.
