A relaxed beach lodge a walk along the sand from Kilindoni on the west coast, close to the airstrip and to the water the whale sharks pass through between roughly October and March.
Butiama Beach opened in 2010 on a white-sand beach just west of Kilindoni, the island's main town, outside the boundaries of the marine reserve. Bungalows come as doubles, twins, triples and two-bedroom family units on the sea front, taking up to around thirty guests in total. Being on the west coast and close to town makes it straightforward to reach and well placed for the morning whale-shark boats, which leave from this side of the island.
