The largest and most straightforward option on Chole Bay, right on the beach inside the marine park, with a PADI five-star dive centre running shore and boat dives from the doorstep.
Basecamp Mafia Island — for years known as Mafia Island Lodge — stands among tall palms on the sand at Utende, on Chole Bay and inside the Mafia Island Marine Park. Rooms are simple, airy and comfortable rather than designed, spread through the coconut grove so each veranda looks onto planting and out to the water, and they number thirty-four across superior, standard and family grades. The PADI five-star dive centre on the beach is the point of the place: boat dives run daily into the sheltered shallows of the bay, and shore diving is straight off the front.
