Lake Manyara

Fifty-one ochre stone cottages scattered across a large working farm on the Karatu side — an easy, unhurried base for a crater day that skips the cold of the rim.

Ngorongoro Farm House stands in farmland a little beyond Karatu's market town, its stone cottages set well apart across generous grounds. Rooms are big, floored in polished stone and en suite, a number of them with a fire laid, and every one has a broad veranda. The scale and the farm setting suit families and groups, and the run up to the Lodoare gate is straightforward for an early start.

Other places to stay nearby

Classic

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Safari lodge · 75 rooms

Built from local river stone and timber and clad in living creepers, it blends almost invisibly into the crater rim while every room enjoys an uninterrupted view down into the caldera.

Luxury

Lemala Ngorongoro Tented Camp

Tented camp · 10 tents

Set in an ancient acacia forest right by the crater's edge, it sits beside the quiet Lemala access route, giving guests one of the shortest and earliest descents to the crater floor of any property.

Ultimate luxury

The Highlands by Asilia

Eco camp · 8 domed suites

Strikingly modern perspex-and-canvas geodesic domes set high on the forested slopes of the Olmoti volcano, well above the crater rim, delivering a contemporary design statement found nowhere else in the highlands.

Ultimate luxury

andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Crater-rim lodge · 30 suites across three camps

The crater's most theatrical address — stilted mud-and-thatch suites whose floor-to-ceiling windows look straight down into the caldera, each with its own butler, run as three small independent camps rather than one large lodge.

Ultimate luxury

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Tented camp · Seven double tents and two family tents

A small Nomad camp high on the crater's quieter north-western rim — the one place you can watch the sun come up over the Ngorongoro caldera and go down over the Serengeti plains.

Classic

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Crater-rim lodge · Around 100 suites

The crater's eastern-rim lodge, up on Lemala Hill at about 2,375 metres beside the quieter of the two descent roads — and the only one on the rim with a pool.

Comfort

Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge

Forest lodge · 24 en-suite rooms

A straightforward, good-value lodge inside the Conservation Area itself, set back a couple of hundred metres from the rim in montane forest and run with the Maasai Pastoral Council so the income stays local.

Luxury

Gibb's Farm

Farm lodge · 17 guest cottages and the main farmhouse

A working coffee farm dating from 1929 on the forested slopes above Karatu, set midway along the run from Lake Manyara up to the crater — closer to a country retreat than a safari base, and largely self-supplied from its own kitchen garden.

Ultimate luxury

Elewana The Manor at Ngorongoro

Manor estate · 18 suites in nine cottages, plus a family cottage and the Manor House

An Afro-European country estate in the Cape Dutch style, set in a 1,500-acre working Arabica coffee farm beside the Conservation Area — closer to an up-country manor house than a safari lodge, with riding on the estate.

Classic

Acacia Farm Lodge

Farm lodge · Suites in farm cottages

A country lodge on a working mixed farm high on the Rift escarpment at Karatu, around five kilometres from the Conservation Area boundary, with long views across the farmland to the Ngorongoro forest.
