About this safari
Four days is enough for Rwanda, and that is much of its appeal. Kigali sits ninety minutes from the Virunga volcanoes on good tarmac, so a gorilla trek that would take a week elsewhere fits comfortably into a long weekend — which makes this the itinerary of choice for travellers adding gorillas to a longer trip, or for anyone with limited leave.
You begin in Kigali with a guided city tour and the Genocide Memorial, a visit that is difficult and worth making. From there a scenic drive through terraced hillsides brings you to Musanze, the gateway to Volcanoes National Park. The following morning you trek into the bamboo forest to spend an hour with one of the park's habituated gorilla families, then meet the community at the Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village. Throughout you travel privately, with a dedicated driver-guide and a 4×4 Land Cruiser.

The journey, morning by morning
Arrival in Kigali
Land at Kigali International Airport, where you are met with a VIP meet-and-greet and introduced to your driver-guide. The transfer into the city takes around twenty minutes. The evening is yours to settle in, eat well and rest before the drive north.
Kigali city tour, the Genocide Memorial and the drive to Musanze
A guided morning through Kigali — its markets, craft cooperatives and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which sets the country's recent history and its recovery in context. After lunch, a scenic drive of about three and a half hours climbs through terraced hillsides to Musanze, at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes.
Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
An early transfer by 4×4 to park headquarters for the ranger briefing, where groups of eight are assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families. The trek through bamboo forest on the volcanic slopes can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on where the family has moved overnight. You then spend an hour with them. The afternoon is gentler: lunch at the lodge, then the Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village for dance, drumming and a conversation with the community that lives alongside the park.
Return to Kigali and departure
A slow breakfast with the Virungas on the horizon, then the drive back to Kigali for your onward flight — or on to the next leg, if you are continuing into Kenya or Tanzania.

- How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking in Rwanda?
- Reasonably fit rather than athletic. Treks range from about one to four hours each way at altitude, on steep and sometimes muddy forest paths. Families are assigned on the morning by the rangers, and you can ask to be placed with a nearer group. Porters are available and worth taking — they carry your pack, steady you on the descent, and the work supports households around the park.
- Is a gorilla permit included, and how far ahead should I book?
- The permit is secured separately once your booking is confirmed, at the published Rwanda Development Board rate of US$1,500 per person. Rwanda issues a limited number each day and the popular months sell out well ahead, so we recommend confirming six to twelve months in advance where you can. If your dates are close, tell us and we will check availability before you commit to anything.
- What is the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
- Fifteen, and it is enforced at the park briefing. For families travelling with younger children we can build an alternative around golden monkey tracking, Kigali and Lake Kivu, and arrange for the adults to trek on separate days.
- Can four days really be enough?
- For gorillas, yes. Kigali is close to the park by African standards and the roads are good, so the trek sits comfortably inside four days without feeling rushed. If you have longer, the natural additions are golden monkey tracking, Nyungwe's chimpanzees or a few nights on Lake Kivu.
- When is the best time of year to go?
- The gorillas are there year-round. June to September and December to February are drier and the trails firmer. The wetter months bring greener forest, fewer visitors and softer light, at the cost of muddier going — many photographers prefer them.
